"Psychopath"

For most people on the planet, the term "psychopath" evokes thoughts of violence and bloodshed - and evil of the darkest kind.

But during 25 years, a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has built a body of work that may help temper such deeply ingrained perceptions.

Sure, people do commit horrific, unimaginable crimes. But does that automatically mean they are psychopathic? And what is "psychopathy" anyway? With unique research access to prison inmate populations in Wisconsin, Joseph Newman has devoted his career to answering such questions.

The proper understanding of psychopathy has implications for the treatment of inmates everywhere - particularly for those who are wrongfully labeled. Newman's work could also serve as the backbone of new behavioral interventions that target psychopathic behaviors.

So who are psychopaths? Broadly speaking, they are people who use manipulation, violence and intimidation to control others and satisfy selfish needs. They can be intelligent and highly charismatic, but display a chronic inability to feel guilt, remorse or anxiety about any of their actions.

Scientists estimate that 15-25 percent of men and 7-15 percent of women in U.S. prisons display psychopathic behaviors. The condition, however, is hardly restricted to the prison system. Newman estimates that up to 1 percent of the general population could be described as psychopathic. Surprisingly, many who fall into that bracket might lead perfectly conventional lives as doctors, scientists and company CEOs.

"Psychopathy appears to exist throughout the world and has probably existed throughout history," Newman says.

As I read this article I got chill bumps at the implications of the percentages! If his data is true that means over 380,000 Psychopath in America! Over 7300 per state.

Not good vibes to start Monday with. I once worked a prison ministry here in Alabama many years ago and what I found there was my reason for reading this article. There are so many who have a mental imbalance that with the right medication can live a normal productive live.

This brings up the next question, what is NORMAL?

Attitude

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed

each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and
shaved
perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home
today.
His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After
many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he
smiled
sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual
description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had
been
hung on his window.

"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having
just
been presented with a new puppy.

"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
room
or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I
arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. "It's a decision I make
every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in
bed
recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no
longer
work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new
day
and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my
life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank

account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank.
I
am still depositing." Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Are you One

I havent received a better e-mail than this one in a while! Brings back a lot of good memories.

If you were born after 1979, feel free to ignore this message!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no

lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,

made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and
the government regulated our lives for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

PS -The big type is because your eyes are shot at your age

MAXINE AND HER Five NEW BOYFRIENDS!

I have become a little older since I saw you last and
a few changes have come into my life since then.
Frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal.

I am seeing 5 gentlemen every day and working on seeing the sixth one. As soon as I wake up. Will Power helps me get out of bed.

Then I go to see John.

Then Charlie Horse comes along and when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention.

When he leaves, Art Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint.

After such a busy day, I'm really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay.

What a life!

Oh yes, I'm also flirting with Al Zymer.

P.S.
The preacher came to call the other day. He said
at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter.

I told him, "Oh, I do it all the time. No matter
where I am in the house, upstairs, kitchen, or basement, I ask myself, "Now, what am I here after?"

The Other Babe

Babe Didrikson

Babe Didrikson Zaharias

Zaharias, Mildred Ella Didrikson (1911-1956). Mildred Ella (Babe) Didrikson Zaharias, athlete, was born on June 26, 1911, in Port Arthur, Texas, the sixth of seven children of Norwegian immigrants Ole Nickolene and Hannah Marie (Olson) Didriksen. Ole Didriksen was a seaman and carpenter, and his wife was an accomplished skater in Norway. In 1915 the family moved to Beaumont, Texas, where the children, with the encouragement of both parents, became skilled performers on the rustic gymnasium equipment that their father built in the backyard. Mildred Didrikson, who changed the spelling of her surname, acquired her nickname during sandlot baseball games with the neighborhood boys, who thought she batted like Babe Ruth. A talented basketball player in high school, Didrikson was recruited during her senior year in 1930 to do office work at Employers Casualty Company of Dallas and to spark the company's semiprofessional women's basketball team, the Golden Cyclones. Between 1930 and 1932 she led the team to two finals and a national championship and was voted All-American each season. Her exceptional athletic versatility prompted Employers Casualty to expand its women's sports program beyond basketball. Didrikson represented the company as a one-woman team in eight of ten track and field events at the 1932 Amateur Athletic Union Championships. She placed in seven events, taking first place in five-shot put, javelin and baseball throws, eighty-meter hurdles, and long jump; she tied for first in the high jump and finished fourth in the discus throw. In three hours Didrikson singlehandedly amassed thirty points, eight more than the entire second-place team, and broke four world records. Her performances in the javelin throw, hurdles, and high jump qualified her to enter the 1932 Olympics, where she again broke world records in all three events. She won gold medals for the javelin and hurdles and, despite clearing the same height as the top finisher in the high jump, was awarded the silver medal because she went over the bar head first, a foul at that time.

I saw the movie of her life story yesterday and Wow! I only new her as a good golfer! She is a very fasanating lady. If you would like to read the bio on her go here.

I enjoyed the movie and sure admire this wonderful lady!

What's Left

Eighteen year old Miss World from PortoRico, beautiful and rich! Where do you go from the top?

This has got to be something they must think about. Young, beautiful, and where do I go from here? Most get married and you never hear from them again. But is that so bad, I don't think so. Some go into modeling some try the entertainment industry while others are quite happy just being a mom.

Our fast passed society will forget them before the month or even the week is out. However becoming a mom is the greatest prize of all. Money, fame, and a diamond crown will never replace the bond between a mother and her child.

Love of the game

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" the man asked.

"No, I don't waste time fishing," the homeless man said. "I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 ye ars!"

"Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of food?" the man asked.

"What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?" exclaimed the homeless man.

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."

The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up beer, fishing, golf, and sex."

Time To Reflect

When was the last time you spent time just by yourself? Reflection for some is just to painful but there are those special times we cherish.

The week has been like a blur my patience have worn then but I am still in control of my emotions. The door hinges are about worn out from the kids running in and out. It has been a hot week, hit 100* yesterday. With the door opening and closing every couple of minutes the air conditioner hasn't stopped! Man I sure hate to see this months power bill.

My wife called from Nashville, Tenn. around 10:00. I told her to spend the night at the lake. I knew she would be tired from her trip and wouldn't get any rest hear! LOL!

Megan and I went to church last night and took two of the great-grandkids. Not a good idea, believe me it wasn't mine! Any way I had to get on them a couple of times, they weren't too bad. After communion A.J. the oldest said in a loud voice "papa when are we leaving", I like to have had a heart attack! LOL!

"Bad day at golf is better than a good day at work:

Weather was great for golf, upper eighties and over cast most of the day. To bad my score didn't reflect the good day! LOL! Strange My normal shot is a push everything was going left. I believe I was holding the club to low in my left hand. I don't ever practice. Range balls just cost to much. Besides I always hit them good on the range and then bad on the course!

My wife made it ok to Omaha. She said she got thirty miles to a gallon on the road in my car. I never knew it got that good of mileage. They are coming back next Thursday.

My granddaughter called last night, they will be in this morning around seven or eight am. They are traveling at night so the kids will sleep. Two weeks, it will go by fast for them.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Thoughtful E-mail

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things.

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1987 . They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine

They have always had cable.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.!

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane Boss, de plane".

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter

Do you feel old yet? (Sorry) Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type, that's for those of you who have trouble reading.

Thought for the day

A School Nurse in Kentucky wrote the info below:

A pediatrician told her the BEST way to remove a tick.
(This is great, because it works in those places where it's
sometimes difficult to reach with tweezers: between toes,
in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.)

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick
with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few
seconds (15-20). The tick will come out on its own and
be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

This technique WORKS and it's much less traumatic for
the patient. And, unless someone is allergic to soap,
this would not be damaging in any way. Several people
who have used this called back to say, "It worked!"
